Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

Emma Andrus, CTRS

Emma received her Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management and Policy: Therapeutic Recreation option from the University of New Hampshire. She completed her internship at Burlington Parks and Recreation and then passed the National Board exam, obtaining her NCTRC certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Emma was named one of National Recreation and Park Association’s Top 30 under 30 young professionals for 2023.

Recreation Therapist

Eva Burbidge, CTRS

Eva received her Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Iowa. She completed her internship at Burlington Parks and Recreation and then passed the National Board exam obtaining her NCTRC certification!

What is a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or Recreation Therapist? 

  • Recreational Therapists (RTs) are the qualified providers for therapeutic recreation programs/services.  
  • In order for an RT to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist they must complete a bachelor degree or higher with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation.
  • Additionally, RTs must complete a 560+ hour internship under the supervision of another RT.
  • Finally, an RT must complete and pass the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification’s exam to become a CTRS.

Therapeutic Recreation Staff


Burlington Parks and Recreation Department is fortunate to have a wonderful team of therapeutic recreation staff. These are individuals who are passionate about inclusion and access to recreation for people with disabilities. They include staff with years of direct support experience, recreation therapists as well as professionals in related fields  such as occupational therapy, special education, physical therapy and more! 

TR staff provides support to participants in community outing programs, inclusion services, adaptive programs and sensory friendly events. Our TR staff's effort and dedication make our TR programs possible!
