Planning

The Planning Department plays a key role in shaping the future of new and infill development. The department develops guiding policies for the Town's long-range planning, strategic plan, and reviews new developments through bylaws, zoning regulations, and subdivision regulations.

Planning involves the complex interaction of individuals, business organizations, other advocacy groups, and developers, with appointed and elected Town officials and staff. Voters elect individuals to serve on the seven-member Planning Board, who decide on development projects under their jurisdiction. The Planning  staff are employees that work with the Planning Board, Economic Development Department, Select Board, Conservation Commission, Board of Health, Town Administrator and committees of Town Meeting to administer the planning and economic development programs.

Our intent is to create and facilitate an effective partnership with residents and businesses in the community by providing a fair, objective, predictable, transparent and accountable planning process. We seek to ensure that Burlington continues to be a healthy, safe, attractive, and enjoyable place to live, work or visit.
