The Burlington Police Department has partnered with Burlington schools to ensure the safety of all students and staff. The Burlington Police Department has designated school resource officers (“SROs”) who receive specialized training and serve as liaisons between the schools and the department.
The SROs’ primary function is law enforcement; however, they also function as educators and informal mentors. They promote school safety by maintaining a positive school environment, enhancing the relationship between students, staff, and law enforcement, and promoting school participation while implementing community policing concepts.
SROs recognize that they have public speaking opportunities within our schools, allowing them to present on several public safety topics affecting students. Social media and technology are school safety issues often addressed by SROs as they are equipped to discuss the adverse effects of inappropriate use. In addressing the use of social media and technology, SROs can cover an array of topics, such as cyberbullying, fake news, sexting, and the potential harm caused by each.
Burlington SROs participate in outreach programs throughout the year, including radKIDS, Special Olympics, the Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA), and many other local and community programs.
