Obtaining a Sewer Permit

As a result of the excessive amounts of Infiltration (see page of groundwater) and Inflow (illicit connections) in the Town of Burlington’s Sewer System, a sewer moratorium was instituted as required under the Administrative Consent Order (ACO) issued by the Department of Environmental Protection. Under the ACO the Town was authorized by DEP to establish a “Sewer Bank” that allows new connections based on Sewer Allocation at a Inflow/Infiltration (I/I) removal rate of 5:1.

Only Licensed Utility Contractors May Obtain Permits.

For New Sewer Connections

Sewer Allocation must be obtained from the Engineering Division, for a single family home or flow under 499 gallons per day (gpd). See Sewer Allocation Application. The Board of Selectmen must approve flow of 500 gpd or greater.

Apply and pay fee for a Sewer Connection Permit at the Board of Health. Obtain Street Opening/Utility Permit, at DPW/Engineering. Although there is no fee for this permit, proof of Sewer Allocation and copy of the Board of Health permit is required.

For Existing Sewer Connection repair or renewal

Obtain Street Opening/Utility Permit, at Engineering Division. Although there is no fee for the sewer permit, proof of Sewer Allocation and copy of the Board of Health permit is required.

For Existing Sewer Connection repair or renewal

Obtain Street Opening/Utility Permit, at Engineering Division.
