The Burlington Board of Selectmen is working hard to ensure a lasting supply of clean, fresh, water. We are finding and repairing leaks in our system and upgrading our aging pipes.

The challenges of the future are even more complex and will require the support and cooperation of all households, businesses, industries and institutions.

Together, we can save thousands of gallons of water each day. Saving water will also help control your water and sewer bills. Please do your part to conserve. YOU can make a difference.

Since water is available at a mere turn of the tap, we tend to take its abundance for granted.

Conservation does work

The reservoir and water table rises and falls depending on rainfall and the amount of water we use. We cannot control the weather, but we can make conservation a daily habit.

If we all do our part – homeowners, renters, students, businesses and industry – we can save millions of gallons a year. We can ensure that there is plenty of water available for everyone now and in the future. There are many ways you can help.

Take a New Lease on Conservation

You can save a few gallons in the kitchen, and many more in the bathroom by following these simple tips:

ü Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. Save 4-10 gallons a day.

ü Never use your toilet as a wastebasket. Save 3-7 gallons per flush.

ü Take shorter showers (5 to 10 minutes will get you clean). Save 3-7 gallons per minute.

ü If you prefer a bath, close tub drain before turning on the water. The initial cold water will be warmed by the hot water added later. Save 3 gallons or more.

ü Fill your bathtub only halfway. A full tub holds more than 50 gallons! Save up to 25 gallons.

ü Fill your sink or basin when washing and rinsing dishes. Save 8-15 gallons per day.

ü Run your dishwasher only when full. Save up to 15 gallons per load.

ü Wash vegetables and fruit in a basin. Use a brush to remove dirt. Save 2-4 gallons per day.

ü Run your garbage disposal only when necessary. Save 2-7 gallons per minute.

ü Run your washing machine only when full, or adjust the water level setting carefully. Washing machines use 25-50 gallons per load. Save 25-100 gallons per week.
