English Language Learning

All students who are identified at registration as coming from a family that speaks a language other than English are screened to determine their English language proficiency.  A student who is identified as an English Language Learner is provided with English Language Learning (ELL) services.

Our ELL Program aims to help students learn English as quickly as possible, develop appropriate academic and social skills, and progress in content areas.

In a small group or individualized setting, ELL teachers  provide instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing, working with a variety of English proficiency levels, cultural backgrounds and learning styles.

All English Language Learners receive instruction by specialized ELL teachers and/or instructional aides in addition to regular classroom instruction. Burlington Public Schools currently offers ELL program instruction at all six schools, from Kindergarten to grade 12.
