Firearms Licensing

To apply for a Firearms Identification Card or License to Carry Firearms, you must contact Sgt. Michael Debye @ 781-505-4966 to schedule an appointment.

All firearms license applications require an appointment so that data may be electronically entered into the Massachusetts Instant Record Check System

Link to Firearms Records Bureau (LTC/FID application)  FRB is a valuable resource for the public to answer questions regarding the Commonwealth's gun laws and has all the applications and forms for firearms licensing.

If this is the first time you are applying for a License to Carry Firearms (LTC) you will need to bring with you to the appointment:

  • Your driver’s license.
  • A receipt from the Burlington Town Hall Tax office showing you paid the $100.00 application fee in cash or check (made payable to The Town of Burlington)
  • A Copy of your Massachusetts approved firearms-training course certificate.           
  • A completed application for an LTC.

If this is the first time you are applying for a Firearms Identification Card (FID)
you will need to bring with you to the appointment:

  • Your driver’s license.
  • A receipt from the Burlington Town Hall Tax office showing you paid the $100.00 application fee in cash or check (made payable to The Town of Burlington). FID under 18 years old is $25 and requires a certificate of permission from a parent or guardian.
  • A Copy of your Massachusetts approved firearms-training course certificate.
  • A completed application for an FID.

To renew your License to Carry Firearms or Firearms Identification Card
you will need to bring with you to the appointment:

  • Your driver’s license.
  • A receipt from the Burlington Town Hall Tax office showing you paid the $100.00 application fee in cash or check (made payable to The Town of Burlington.  (Note: Renewals for persons age 70 and over are free of charge.)
  • Your License to Carry Firearms and/or Firearms Identification Card.
  • A completed application for an LTC.

For renewals please call for an appointment 3 months prior to the expiration of your current firearms license.

Q: How long will it take to get my LTC/FID?

A: Licenses are currently taking 3-5 weeks (Process involves three other agencies)

Q: How do I get my completed LTC/FID?

A: When completed your License/FID Card will be mailed to the address you provided at the time of application (home/business).  

Q: I am changing my address. Who do I notify?

Under M.G.L. c. 140, §129B(10), and §131(l), a holder of an FID Card or an LTC must notify, in writing, the licensing authority that issued the Card or License, the chief of police into whose jurisdiction the Card or License holder moves, and the  FRB/DCJIS. The notice must be made by certified mail within 30 days of its occurrence. In lieu of notifying the FRB/DCJIS via certified mail, you may call 617.660.4722 to report your change of address.  The following information is required: name, date of birth, active firearms license number, and driver’s license number for identity verification.

Q: I am transferring/selling, a firearm:

A: Massachusetts General Law c. 140, §§128A and 128B, requires all individuals who sell, transfer, inherit, or lose a firearm to report the sale, transfer, inheritance, or loss of the firearms to the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services Firearms Records Bureau (FRB). This on-line system will allow you to report the sale, transfer, inheritance, or loss/theft data electronically to the FRB.

Please Note: If there are any issues/questions about this process you will be contacted immediately for clarification or documentation by Sgt. Debye. Calling other Agencies involved in this process will not expedite the process, and all contacts to them will be forwarded to Burlington PD.
