Skelton's Return
In one of his last letters from California, written from San Francisco in July, 1857, Skelton described the difficulty of meeting his expenses and his reasons for abandoning his claim (top). Riches had not come to him, nor to his acquaintances, whom, he noted, “are working for about the same wages that they could get at home” (bottom). Shortly thereafter he returned home and resumed the life he had led before leaving for California in search of gold.
Skelton returned home in 1857 and resumed his life as a farmer. He married and raised a family and built this house which still stands at 92 Francis Wyman Road.
