Historical Note

Over half of the records were created by James B. Ashworth (JBA) during his service on the Historical Commission (1981-1986 and 1993-1999). The other records were created by Archivist/Records Manager Lisa Plato (LP), originally as part of the Burlington Volunteer Family History Project. Files created by LP have an ampersand (@) at the end of the file name.

JBA created the majority of the files from World Family Tree CD-ROMs and printed genealogies; the former includes a large volume of non-Burlington material. As a general rule, JBA did not document sources. Exceptions include imported information from World Family Tree and occasionally putting information in parentheses in the name field e.g., GS or bp (gravestone or baptism, respectively). Source information is indicated by an S on the upper right side of the data field. Note that World Family Tree also estimates birth and death years; this is noted as Est. yyyy-yyyy.

LP entered information in Family Tree Maker as she located historic house information, completed reference requests, and completed photograph catalog records. LP created the majority of her files while cataloging the Image Collection (RG123), using genealogy to date homes and identify photographs. LP also used the software to organize initial research on Civil War veterans, part of a 2001 exhibit at the Burlington Historical Museum. Wherever possible, LP used JBA's original files and corroborated the information.

The original files are held by the Archives. Dates after 1930 were deleted from the public access CD-ROMS, in order to parallel federal census access restrictions and to protect privacy. The files are read only. Please submit changes to the Archives on family group sheets.

Scope and Content

The electronic files were created with Broderbund's Family Tree Maker 7.0 for Windows 95 and 98; the software is manufactured by Learning Company Incorporated. Although the files are in a proprietary format, the information can be exported to GEDCOM format, a standard for genealogy exchange. A CD-ROM copy is also available at the Burlington Public Library. It is unclear if the notes field exports to GEDCOM; this must be verified prior to migration.

The easiest way to view information is to go to the menu bar to View and select Index of Individuals. Scroll down to the name you wish to select and click Okay. This will take you to the family group record. A number of reports may be viewed, but the most common is Genealogy Report. To access this report, go to the menu bar to View and select Genealogy Report. Go to the menu bar to Contents and Number of Generations to show to adjust the number of generations shown in the report.

See Index Terms for genealogies included in the collection. Other family names are represented, but they have not been indexed. For instance, Bennett information may also appear in the Sewall file. See the Archives' database index file for a preliminary index file.

If there is additional information in the notes field, there will be two lines under the More button. To access the information, click on More and Click on Notes. Note that in some cases there are multiple files for the same family name and that information for one individual may be located in multiple family files.

Files were named with eight characters, which caused some family names to be abbreviated.
