Historical Notes for the Image Collection

Most photographs include an item-level historical note.

Scope and Contents of the Records

This guide is a work in progress: the images represent item-level cataloging as of December 2000. If minimal information was available, the catalog record notes [Catalog record in progress]. If you have additions or corrections, please contact the Archivist. As images are donated, they will added to the collection.

The index includes image title, category, and item number. All of the titles are created i.e., they were not provided by the image. If information was added to the title--and if there was uncertainty about the information--the information was placed in square brackets. If the image provided a date, that date was used in the title. If a date was not provided, birth and death dates and contextual information were used to estimate the time period.

Organization of the Records

These records are organized into 8 series.
If an image documents a business or historic home, but contains identified individuals, it was probably placed under Buildings and Businesses or Historic Homes and Farms, not People. If the image was a portrait--or if the individual was the main subject of the image--the image was placed under People. If the image showed more than one building or covered a large area, it was probably placed under Landscapes. The Transportation category primarily contains images related to Burlington's streetcar system, as well as other town-provided transportation.
Many images fall into multiple categories. Please use the index to locate subjects, personal names, and geographic places.

Custodial History

Fogelberg Collection (2000.08)

Between the early 1970s and late 1990s, Burlington Historian John Edward (Ed) Fogelberg meticulously documented Burlington's written and visual history. Many of the photographs in the Fogelberg Collection were published in Burlington: Part of a Greater Chronicle (Burlington, Mass.: Burlington Historical Commission, 1976, 1998) or in Mr. Fogelberg's Woburn Daily Times Chronicle (Burlington edition) weekly series, "Burlington: Past and Present." Many of the images in the Fogelberg Collection still have printer marks.

For a complete list of the Fogelberg articles, see the Archives' web site. Many thanks to Jim Ashworth for providing a cross-reference between the Image Collection and the Fogelberg Collection. Due to technical limitations, the publication information is not available in the following guide, but are available as separate Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files:

Crawford Collection (2000.09)

The house was built by Francis Carter "Frank" Marion (b. 1863) ca. 1889; FCM moved into the house with his wife, Leila Johnson Walker (1861-1903) after their marriage in 1889.

The Crawford family acquired the farm during the early part of the 20th century. Brothers James Crawford (1886-1938) and Thomas "Willie" William Crawford (1883-1944) operated the farm until JC bought a farm in Cummings Park, Woburn, Massachusetts and ca. 1942, TWC took over the farm. AJC worked on the farm as a young man, when it belonged to his two brothers, James Crawford (1886-1938) and Thomas "Willie" William Crawford (1883-1944). TWC took over the farm ca. 1942, when JC bought a farm on Washington Street, Woburn, Massachusetts. AJC took over farm after TWC's death in 1944. The construction of Rt. 128 split the farm in two parts, requiring a mile and a half detour down Newbridge Ave. Former Burlington Fire Chief Herbert W. Crawford grew up on the Crawford farm. The Crawford Collection documents the farmhouse, life on the farm, and Crawford family members.

AJC sold the farm ca. 1960 to Jack Moss. The knoll where the house and the barn stood were leveled for the Beacon Apartments.

Prior to the Crawfords, the area was farmed by generations of the Winns, Cummings, and Marions.

Historical Commission Image Collection (1999.06)

During 1999 and 2000, the Burlington Historical Museum transferred original and copy images to the Archives. The provenance for the majority of these items must be researched.

These three collections form the bulk of the Image Collection, although there many smaller, but invaluable, accessions. A complete list of donations is listed under acquisition information.

Preferred Citation

See individual catalog records for preferred citation.

Acquisition Information

The Image Collection is a composite collection of the following accessions:

Nancy McIntire (1999.01)

Historical Commission Image Collection (1999.06)

John Edward Fogelberg Collection (2000.08)

Herbert W. Crawford Collection (2000.09)

David Lovering (2000.11)

Fellowship Bible Church (Burlington, Mass.) (2000.16)

Unfortunately the current XML/HTML transfer and style sheet does not display provenance information, although it is included in the native XML finding aid and cataloging database. We hope to correct this in future generations of the finding aid. In the meantime, see the Adobe Acrobat (pdf) version of the database-produced finding aid for:
