Persons
wishing to obtain a license must file their intentions with the Town Clerk in
person (except for in cases where one person is in the military or
incarcerated) at least three days before the ceremony. Court waivers to the three-day waiting
period may be obtained at the Woburn
District Court or the Probate
Court in Cambridge. Couples obtain
a letter from the Clerk to bring to the Court. The cost of a license in
Burlington is $25.00, which includes a certified copy. The license is valid for
sixty days, and may be used for a ceremony conducted in any Massachusetts city
or town. The member of the clergy or Justice of the Peace who performs the
ceremony must sign the license and return it to the city or town where it was
issued. The completed license is then sent to the State Registry of Vital
Statistics. Certified copies of the
record must be obtained from the city/town where the intentions were filed or
from the State Registry of Vital Statistics.

The
Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) as adopted in Massachusetts provides a means of
perfecting a secured interest (lien) in real estate or personal property that
is offered as collateral. If the property is located within the Town, a record
of the lender's interest may be filed with the Town Clerk. Once filed, the lien
serves as notice that the identified property is subject to an encumbrance or
competing claim. A lien must be renewed every five years to remain effective.
The fee for filing/terminating/amending a lien is $10.00 for 1-3 pages and $1
for each additional page. Burlington maintains a
UCC database and conducts searches over the phone at no charge (781)
270-1660. NOTICE: EFFECTIVE 7/1/01 ALL
LIENS ARE RECORDED WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE ONLY.
