Welcome to the Town of Burlington,

Burlington’s mosquito control contractor, East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project (the Project) has initiated their 2010 services in Burlington for the control of mosquitoes. The Project will conduct truck mounted aerosol spraying on July 15th in neighborhoods located between Cambridge Street and Middlesex Turnpike and on July 19 in neighborhoods near Fox Hill Road, Mill Street, Locust Street, Peach Orchard Road and Beacon Street. The Project uses a spray formulation containing the pesticide, sumithrin, to control mosquitoes. Sumithrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that is classified as slightly toxic by the EPA. Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity of sumithrin and the small amount used to control mosquitoes. As with any pesticide, people should minimize exposure. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a couple of minutes while the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close windows facing the street. The aerial application of the biological larvicide Bti to the Vine Brook Swamp took place on April 15, 2010. This application is conducted to control mosquito larvae. Typically spring floodwater mosquitoes develop through their aquatic stages between early April and mid May. The summer floodwater mosquitoes will develop following large rain events occurring between late May and early September. Mosquito populations in wetland areas will continue to be sampled and Bti applied when appropriate. This process will continue through the summer. The Project conducted truck mounted aerosol spraying on June 16th in neighborhoods near Wilmington Rd., Westwood St., Beaverbrook Rd., Upland Rd., Foxhill Rd., Peach Orchard Rd., Keans Rd., and the Winnmere Section. On June 22 the first round of catch basin larval control was conducted. A second round will occur in August. Information regarding mosquito control services and the schedule and areas to be sprayed is available via a recorded message at 781-893-5759 and at the Project’s website at www.town.sudbury.ma.us/services/health/emmcp . If residents have any questions related to the spraying or any questions on mosquitoes, call the Burlington Board of Health Dept. at 781-270-1955 or the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project at 781-899-5730.
