Burlington Board of Health MassRecycle is partnering with the Board of Health to collect cell phones at the Health Office, 61 Center St., Room 207, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents will be able to drop off their unwanted cell phones at the collection - free of charge. All cell phones, regardless of age or condition, will be accepted. Residents are advised to deactivate phones. Cell phones will be shipped to Charitable Recycling in Michigan and MassRecycle will receive a monetary donation for each cell phone received. “Every day, thousands upon thousands of worthless cell phones are thoughtlessly discarded in the U.S.” said Jessica Wozniak, Executive Director, MassRecycle. The phones can be recycled and sent to areas with economic necessity. Some phones are also refurbished and given to those who are in need of 911, emergency only, communications. According to Charitable Recycling, 150 million cell phones are retired each year stockpiled used cell phones weighing over 75,000 tons that could potentially enter the waste stream. “We’re very excited about this opportunity”, said Ms. Wozniak. “It not only greatly benefits MassRecycle and Burlington but assists in preserving the environment and bringing communications to those who could otherwise not afford it.” Cell phones contain many toxins and are very hazardous to our environment and they should not end up in landfills. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally-responsible manner. How to Donate Your Cell Phone:
Name of Organization: Board of Health To learn about mailing in cell phones to Charitable Recycling directly, visit http://www.massrecycle.org/cell-phone-donation.html. About Charitable Recycling (www.charitablerecycling.com): Donated used cell phones will be refurbished and put to further use through Charitable Recycling. Many phones are donated to shelters for abused adults and children so they may have 911 (emergency only) communications. Charitable Recycling also provides cell phones to medical patients who are awaiting organ transplants. Also, some of the phones we receive are refurbished and redeployed in areas of the world where there are no land (wire) lines, or, where the cost of a new phone is prohibitive. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally-responsible manner. About MassRecycle (www.massrecycle.org): MassRecycle (a 501(c) (3) non-profit) is a statewide coalition of individuals, governments, businesses, institutions and non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting and realizing the vital environmental, social and economic benefits created by reducing, reusing, and recycling waste materials, and by increasing the utilization of recycled products.
