Voter registration in Burlington has never been easier than it is today. You may visit the Town Clerk's Office in Burlington Town Hall and complete a voter registration form in person. You may also register by mail. Mail-in voter registration forms are available at the Town Hall, Public Library, Post Office, Recreation Dept., or the Council on Aging and various other locations throughout the state. Mail-in forms also may be obtained by calling the State Elections Division at (800) 462-VOTE or requesting a form clerk@burlmass.org. In addition, the state registries of motor vehicles, social service agencies and military recruitment offices provide voter registration services. At this time, photocopies of the State’s Mail-In registration form is NOT allowed, As of July 13, 2004 emergency regulations authorize the acceptance of Any person who is a Burlington resident, a United States citizen and will be eighteen years old as of the next election is eligible to register to vote. The penalty for fraudulent registration increased recently to a fine of ten thousand dollars or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
You will remain on the list of voters so long as you complete and return the annual municipal census or vote regularly. If you move to another city or town, you must re-register in your new community. Voters who are unable to vote on Election Day because of physical disability, religious beliefs or absence from the town may vote by absentee ballot. If you will be absent from Burlington for an extended period of time, you may submit a single application for all elections occurring within the year the application is accepted. Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the Town Clerk or the Office of the Secretary of State. Applications may be submitted in person or by mail. The voter or a family member must sign all applications under the pains and penalties of perjury, before a ballot will be made available. Click Here for an application for a family member! In a primary election, a voter who is not registered in a political party must specify the ballot of the party of choice in the application. You will not become registered in a party because of your participation in a primary. Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the Town Clerk before 12:00 noon the day before an election. (A voter who is admitted to a health care facility after noon of the fifth day before an election may apply for a ballot up until the close of the polls and may request to have the ballot delivered.) Absentee ballots generally are available three weeks before an election. Information for overseas voters regarding the Federal Write-In Ballot. A voter who is permanently disabled need not submit a request for an absentee ballot every election. If such a voter submits a note from a registered physician indicating that he is disabled permanently, the Town Clerk will automatically send an application for an absentee ballot each year for all elections during the year. Once signed and returned, a ballot will be mailed to you for every election held during that calendar year. All voting is conducted at the Burlington High School on Cambridge Street for all elections.
Running for Public Office Any person who is a Burlington resident and a registered voter may obtain nomination papers for the April Annual Town Election ballot from the Town Clerk's Office. Nomination papers and election calendars are available each January 1st. . Candidates running for townwide office require the signatures of 50 voters. Representative Town Meeting candidates require the signatures of 10 voters of the precinct.
Student Vote Program The Town has implemented a Student Vote Program in an effort to familiarize the children with the process and encourage their participation as adults. Students in grades K-12 are encouraged to cast their ballots at a specially designated "precinct" at the polls at the Annual Town Election each April.
